Seven Sisters sunrise from Seaford Heads

Seven Sisters sunrise from Seaford Heads
150 cm x 100 cm, Oil on canvas board. 2020.

First one finished in the ‘Corona’ era. Big canvas (for me anyway), but it is a big wide landscape! One of my favorite magical places here in the UK. Visited again with an old Aussie mate and wandered along this spot with our cameras. The sky was quite grey the morning of our visit, but another sunrise a few months later along the coast in Worthing fitted the bill really well.
I might knock out a blog post on my ‘process’ on this piece, but in short had the idea to try and capture this massive landscape on a nice big canvas to do it justice. Focus to start was sky, waves, cliffs, but after blocking in a few bits composited together, the wonderful foreground rock became the star for me at least.
This rock kind-of summed up what I needed out of this as I painted it to be honest.
Resolute. Steadfast against the waves.
Painted over a few months, I got the news that my younger brother had passed away just after I’d started. A few short weeks later and we are all in this worldwide massive change of tack… so suddenly I have an amazing window across a beautiful bay looking at me at a time when none of us can leave our homes. Solid against the waves of life and hopefully, a new dawn will bring us all new challenges and enjoyment again.
